An olive branch

According to Wikipedia;

"The leafy branches of the olive tree - the olive leaf as a symbol of abundance, glory and peace - were used to crown the victors of friendly games and bloody wars. As emblems of benediction and purification, they were also ritually offered to deities and powerful figures..."

It causes this blogger to wonder if perhaps there was an abundance of "friendly games" in the area? We've certainly been engaged in some "bloody wars" recently. Perhaps there was actually a pressing need for truckloads of olive branches than necessitated the blunt amputation of the silvery green trees around Aviana. Perhaps instead they were offered to some deity as "emblems of purification" to drive the unholy memories of Riverstone management from our collective conscience. We can only hope that the armies of contractors roaming the grounds did not offer them to our new owners. Though powerful figures they may be to those upon whom they depend on for employment in these troubled times, deities they are surely not.

Whatever the reason, we do hope that these trees rebound, though their fate seems in doubt at the moment due to the severity of the work. We can only hope that should anymore "trimming" be necessary in the future, that there is a more careful hand at the chainsaw. Many of us enjoy the shade these trees provide when the temperature climes into the 90s during the summertime. What without in-unit air conditioning, or windows which allow units, fans and shade are often our only escape from the force of the sun.

Many of us await completion of renovations, and the natives are growing restless. Given that improvements have been entirely outwardly cosmetic to this point, and given that many of us have been inconvenienced by these improvements on multiple occasions, it's not surprising that this blogger is beginning to hear a low grumble among the tenants. While we applaud the general effort to improve the buildings and their curbside appearance, it's the opinion of this blog that often landlords often forget that tenants actually attempt to carry on lives within the buildings as this construction continues. Off the top of my head I cannot recall if giving a tenant a date range where their unit will be entered is strictly legal (I'll be sure to look that up soon), but it at least pushes the bounds of common courtesy. We hope that a bit more consideration will be given in the future. Once I'm forced to look into "legality" of issues, you know there's the beginnings of a real problem.

More could be said about the renovations, but perhaps enough has been said today. Moving onto other changes, as many of you know by now, the property is now owned as well as managed by Spieker Companies of Palo Alto. We bid a not-so-fond farewell to Riverstone Properties. We also welcome new live-in managers Roma and Ferdie Deluna, who took over the day-to-day duties of running the Aviana on Monday. Roma and Ferdie most recently managed a property in San Clemente, CA. Both have roots in the Philippines. We're happy to report the venerable George Harris will remain on board a head of maintenance. You can report any and all maintenance problems and other issues to Roma and Ferdie directly at rdeluna@spiekercompanies.com. We wish them luck in their new home and jobs.

Is Spieker in the firewood business on the side?!?! They massacred the trees on Rengstorf!

Just found out my one bedroom apartment is now renting for $300 less than I'm paying. Amazing. Can you say RENEGOTIATE?

its fucking sad creepy that you all go online and blog about your problems at the aviana. don't like something? wait your lease out and leave.

You must be from Riverstone Residential or the new management company which seems to be just as corrupt as the prev ious. If thats not it, then you are just the type of person who sits there and takes whatever drifts your way and that is why companies like the two mentioned get away with screwing people. And I will even reveal my name. katy

They just let George go... said he wasn't a "fit" with the new company. Also, the City of Mountain View is looking into the "improvements" since Spieker apparently does not have any building permits for the work or permits to desecrate the trees the way they did

Not surprised. Spieker has quite the file with the City. Navigate the city's website and you can see for yourself.
Here's their game: They take over properties all ove town, fix them up (yes, without ANY permits or oversignt) and lower the rent enough to fill the places in a hurry with three- six- and nine-month leases (nothing beyond). Then they jack your rent and make it downright uncomfortable to stay. If you compain you're out.
I know for a fact the managers have received complaints from more than one tenant about the loud, all-night dope parties going on on in a first-floor apartment facing REngstorf. Shit, the police have been there twice. They haven't done shit but tell one long-time tenant that they may want to move to another apartment. What the hell kind of MANAGEMENT is that?! Yes, I am going to "Wait out" my lease as the previous jerk suggested, but that doesn't mean I'm going to sit back and take it either.
yES, i AM GOING TO "WAID OUT

Yes, that hallway always smells like marijuana. Big Deal. It's practically legal in California anyway.
I have a more pressing concern about Spieker: racism.
I dismissed it as heresay when a tenant who recently moved when they acquired the property said the company was blatantly racist (he now lives at Birch Creek across the street).
It seems the woman with the southern twang who manages their properties locally saw to it that George and Marcangelo, the weekend manager, were both fired. Apparently BOTH were told they were not a "fit" for Spieker.
If you do a little checking you will see that apparently no one of color is a "fit" for Spieker management. Close to 300 employees in California, almost no color> Mmmmm.
Still looking into it. I will get back to you.

That meshes with what I heard about Spieker. The woman from Alabama or wherever is Becky Peek. George and Marc should file a lawsuit. Anyway, may I suggest we not discuss this on the blog and move this particular discussion to the email list instead. Let's assume Spieker knows about the blog.

Poster #6, you must admit the ruckus in #111 has died down considerably since the police visited them. We were all young once. Live and let Live.

Marcangelo got screwed! Very racial. The woman he worked with was very jealous of the number of rentals he got (almost double what she logged).
We'll miss him and his very friendly demeanor.
George, not so much. Too much stuff missing.

Agreed. Mark was great. But George Harris should have been fired.
I messaged Mark to visit the Legal Clinic at Stanford. He was too good at what he did for his firing to have been anything but racial. Brian, who managed Birch Creek, used to work for Spieker and says Mark will have a very good case agains them.

Just got back in town and I have a message to call an attorney represeitng "Markangelo Lovitt." I assume it's the same. I'm too busy to get too involved, but I'll at least call him back Monday.

Here's the 4 - 1 - 1 I got from a friend who knows the Spieker way:
They dumped Mark because his wife is about to have a kid in a coupla weeks, which would make him eligible for paternity leavem something they did not want to pay for. Nice company, dump a guy just before his wife delivers a kid! Whatever, that's their problem. But the silver lining seems to be that it was not racial and that the southern woman is not the second coming of David Duke.
Mark has a lawyuer so let them deal with it. ciao
PS-There's no propane for the bbq. Will they reimburse me if I go get one?

I still say it was racial. You could just feel it. Aryan Realty just didn't want two brothers that visible.

IF ANYBODY IS LOOKING FOR A NEW PLACE...
i just found a great place down the street called North Park. If you go down Rengstorff and cross the CalTrain tracks it's the first complex on the right. They have gorgeous studios for $1,050 and the first month is free. The clubhouse is beautiful. Really nice people there!
